Children/Teens/Families.
"Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky."
Rabindranath Tagore
Early childhood trauma generally refers to the traumatic experiences that occur to children aged 0-6. These traumas can be the result of intentional violence—such as child physical or sexual abuse, or domestic violence—or the result of natural disaster, accidents, or war. Young children also may experience traumatic stress in response to painful medical procedures or the sudden loss of a parent/caregiver, divorce, and/or relocating to a new house and neighborhood. I have been working with children and teens for ten years and I am very effective at building therapeutic alliances with children and teens of any age. I have extensive experience with children who are, or have been in foster-care, on probation, homeless, and/or experienced trauma. I believe deeply in the importance of therapy for children/teens who have experienced trauma within their life. Often, all a child/teen needs is an objective outsider (the therapist) to feel heard and safe in expressing their deepest secrets and fears. A child/teen given the space and tools to express their emotional state will often learn new ways of being in life, and patterns of "disobedience" and "acting-out" will dissolve because they have expressed their fears and beliefs and learned new tools for navigating life's ups and downs effectively.
I work with families in the throes of adolescence struggles. My approach respects the growth and development that needs to take place for the adolescent, while at the same time arming parents with the tools that help them maintain a sense of sanity, dignity, and strength as the official guide of family matters.
My practice includes working with families to address areas of breakdown and improve the harmony of family life. This often includes teaching family members about current transitional phases they are going through and creating strategies to negotiate these particular phases effectively.
Please contact me to further discuss how therapy can assist your child, teen, and/or family in navigating any and all of life's transitions.
